Freya listened as Megan related her dream the next day at school. She was glad her friend had a better dream, and one which was shedding a bit of light on the mystery. “Well at least you know what your ghostly monk is on about now. And she called you Celeste? That’s nice – it suits you

“Thanks,” Megan said, managing a small smile.

“So, this Talitha person who died when she was 184, yet only looked about… what?”

“Thirty,” Megan reminded her.

Freya nodded. “Okay, thirty. And she’s given you an iron cross pendant to hide where no one will ever find it. And this monk person is demanding to know where you’ve hidden it.”

Megan heaved a sigh. “It looks like it.”

“So maybe if you could remember where you hid it, you could tell him and he’ll stop bothering you.”

“No! I can never tell him!” Megan cried, looking totally horrified at the prospect.

Freya stared at her. “Why? Why can’t you tell him?”

“Because…” her voice trailed away as a look of helplessness drifted over her face. “I don’t know. I…I’ve just got this awful feeling that if I tell him, things will never be the same.” She lowered her voice to a whisper. “I just feel that he’s evil, and he must never know. He must never get his hands on it... I don’t know why, it’s just how I feel.”

“But where did you hide it?” Freya asked softly.

Megan shook her head. “I’ve no idea.”

After school they went back to Megan’s house and had dinner with her parents. Mrs Miller seemed less stressed and her dad was good fun, even though he embarrassed his daughter mercilessly, telling tales of the silly things she’d done over the years.

After dinner followed by the most delicious cheesecake for dessert, Megan brought lots of photos up on her computer of old school friends and they chatted and laughed about normal things. Later still they made a huge box of popcorn and watched a couple of cheesy DVDs until they were both yawning madly.

By the time they got into bed, they both realised that they had barely given the shadow on the wall and ghostly monks a second thought.

“No more nightmares,” Freya said, smiling as she snuggled down under the duvet.

“Absolutely not!” Megan agreed, turning off the light. “Goodnight!”

“Goodnight!”

It wasn’t long before Freya could tell by Megan’s breathing that she had fallen fast asleep. She was glad. Megan had looked so pale these last few days. A decent night’s sleep would do her good.

Ten minutes or so later, just as she was drifting off, she realised that Megan was tossing restlessly in her sleep, as if she was dreaming. She was talking in her sleep too but the words were jumbled and made no sense. She hoped she wasn’t locked inside another nightmare.

Freya spoke softly, hoping to banish any bad dreams. “You’re dreaming, Megan…. Megan are you alright? Wake up Megan…”
